FO: Memories of Summer Shawl

Is there a finished object that reminds you of a time, person or place? I know that my Stripe Study Shawl will always bring back memories of this past summer and the special moments spent getting to know my nieces at this time in their lives.

They are both at that awkward in-between age, not quite children but not teenagers either. Full of contradictions and unpredictabilities, creativity and imagination.

Wearing this shawl now is bittersweet because I know that I cannot stop time from passing by. The rows and rows of garter stitch must eventually come to an end. But at least I will have this shawl to remind me.

  1. It's a beautiful shawl. The more I see of this pattern, the more I like it (it helps that I have recently fallen a little bit in love with garter stitch!)

Lovely colours, and I hope wearing it errs on the sweet side of bittersweet :)

  3. It's LOVELY! Isn't that pattern just the best? I'd love to know what kind of yarn you used because the drape is great.

  7. Beautiful! Just looking at it makes me want to curl up in front of a fireplace. Enjoy those memories it holds and think about all of the great times still to come!

  8. I love that shawl! I know what you mean about time passing by. I had a dream with my nephew in it. He was about 5 years old in my dream but now he's 18. It was a happy dream but I woke up crying realizing that the little boy in my dream is gone. I love the man he's become but I still miss that little boy.

  10. It is a little bittersweet sometimes watching people grow up, isn't it? I'm glad you had the time to get to be with your nieces this summer -- and that you have such a beautiful way to remember those special times.

  13. The Stripe Study shawl has been in my "shopping cart" for much too long now and seeing yours has inspired me to get it and cast on. Lovely!! I know what you mean about time passing -- my nieces are now in their mid-20s and my own children are teens. I love how you equated knitted woolies with memories and time the way many do the same with music. xo

  14. That is a beautiful shawl and has such a lovely sentiment behind it. I have one niece and I absolutely adore her, it's a wonderful relationship to have. I have strong memories attaching themselves to lots of my crafts.
Enjoy your memories and wear it while you make some more.

Oh, that is beautiful! And yes, my projects always remind me of where I was or who I was with while working on them.

  18. I love your shawl, but I especially enjoyed how you 'waxed lyrical' about a special time in a child's life...beautifully written and evocative.
